During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. The results of the aspect camera dark (ACA) current calibration performed May 4 were nominal. The temperature-corrected warm pixel counts are consistent with recent mission trends. The latest value is slightly below the trend line and might indicate an annealing effect from the 2016:063 safe mode, but additional measurements are needed to confirm this. A Chandra image release was issued on May 12 describing observations of Tycho's supernova remnant. Tycho belongs to a class of supernovas used to measure the expansion of the Universe so the details of these explosions are very important. For the first time, a movie has been made of the evolution of Tycho's supernova remnant. The movie includes X-rays observations from Chandra spaced out over a decade and a half. By combining the Chandra data with 30 years worth of observations with the VLA, scientists have learned new things about this remnant and its history. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2016/tycho/ The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of GRO J1750-27, which is a follow-up of a Target of Opportunity accepted 2015 May 11. |
