During the last week the observing schedule was replanned to incorporate an observation of HD97658, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Dec 3 and is coordinated with HST. A Chandra image release was issued on Dec 10 describing observations of IC 443, also known as the Jellyfish Nebula, a supernova remnant about 5,000 light years from Earth. Astronomers have been looking for the spinning neutron star, or pulsar, from the explosion that created the remnant. New Chandra observations have likely spotted a pulsar on the southern edge the Jellyfish Nebula. The X-ray data also provide new details about the structure and properties of this pulsar. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2015/ic443/ The schedule of targets for the next two weeks (including the replanned portion of this week's schedule) is shown below and includes observations of GRB150518A and ASASSN-15lh, which are Target of Opportunity follow-ups accepted on Sep 9 and Oct 19 respectively, and observations of 2MASS J04123491+3529592 and 2MASSi J0733092+455506 coordinated with ground-based observatories and NuSTAR respectively. |
