During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Chandra press and image releases were issued on Jul 21 describing Chandra observations of six galaxies --- two spirals and four ellipticals --- that reveal a possibly new class of objects that emit unusually low-energy X-rays but intense levels of ultraviolet radiation. These "hypersoft X-ray sources", which probably have accretion onto a compact object (white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole) as their energy source, may be precursors of supernovae. Their strong ultraviolet emission may contribute to the ionization of interstellar material. For details, see: https://chandra.si.edu/press/26_releases/press_090926.html The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of NGC1358 coordinated with NuSTAR, observations of SN2026sqf, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Aug 27, an observation of AT2024dky, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Jul 16, and observations of 5C7.230, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Sep 4. |
