Operations CXO Status Report

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A real-time procedure was executed on Jul 16 to remove SCS 73 Injector Heater turn on commands for LAE thrusters #1 and #2, located on the sunward side of the spacecraft. The LAE heaters have been used as power ballast during short eclipse events to limit eclipse exit voltage surge; with gradual spacecraft temperature increases over the course of the mission, powering on heaters for hot-side LAE thrusters may result in unacceptable temperature levels. The reduced power draw from leaving only the cold-side heaters on adequately limits the eclipse exit voltage surge.

A Chandra image release was issued on Jul 14 to present data on the galaxy cluster Abell 1775 from Chandra and from other telescopes. Abell 1775 is a system in which a smaller galaxy cluster has collided with a larger one. Galaxy clusters are the largest structures in the Universe held together by gravity, containing hundreds or even thousands of individual galaxies immersed in a thin gas hot enough to radiate X-rays. Because of the large masses and speeds involved, collisions and mergers between galaxy clusters are among the most energetic events in the Universe. In Abell 1775, the smaller cluster in the collision has been stripped of much of its gas, leaving behind a characteristic curved tail of gas visible from Chandra data. New radio data from the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) in the Netherlands and from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in India reveal a radio jet that is a remarkable 2.6 million light years long and is powered by a supermassive black hole in a large elliptical galaxy in the cluster's center.
