Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 25 September 2020 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Real-time procedures were executed during each ground contact to reset the DSN Outage Dead Man Load.

A Chandra image release was issued Sep 22 discussing a new project using sonification to turn astronomical images from Chandra and other telescopes into sound. This allows users to "listen" to the center of the Milky Way as observed in X-ray, optical, and infrared light. In the images, as the cursor moves across, sounds represent the position and brightness of the sources. This project also turned astronomical images of the supernova Cassiopeia A and the "Pillars of Creation" into sound. For details see: https://chandra.si.edu/photo/2020/sonify/

CIAO contributed scripts with significantly enhanced Ds9 Analysis eXtensions (dax) were released on 22 Sep. These extensions are a collection of CIAO tasks that have been integrated with SAOImage DS9. This allows users to access many CIAO tools and applications using a simplified graphical user interface. For details see: https://cxc.harvard.edu/ciao/guides/dax.html

The session schedule for the Chandra Frontiers in Time-Domain Science workshop is now available. The first session is on Oct 7 and the last session is Oct 30. To participate in the live events, please register. For details see: https://cxc.cfa.harvard.edu/cdo/cxctds2020/

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of GX5-1 coordinated with NuSTAR, and observations of Mrk 279, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Sep 16.
