Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 13 September 2019 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Real-time procedures were executed on Sep 7 to turn on gyros A1 and B2 and SPE-B in order to provide rate data to evaluate the longer-term performance of the reserve gyros. Real-time procedures were also executed on Sep 7 to perform an annual check-out of A-side MUPS thrusters, which are selected for use when Chandra is in its safe-mode configuration. Thrusters A2, A3, and A4 were fired. Thrusters performed nominally. Thruster A1 was not fired due to the expected limited life remaining on it. Additional real-time procedures were executed Sep 8 to perform full-frame dark current readouts of the Aspect Camera Assembly CCD.

A Chandra press release was issued on Sep 11 describing Chandra observations of the galaxy GSN 069. Astronomers found X-ray bursts repeating about every nine hours originating from the center of the galaxy. It is the first time this behavior has been detected from a supermassive black hole. For more information see: https://chandra.si.edu/press/19_releases/press_091119.html

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of EXO 1846-031, which is a follow-up to a Target of Opportunity which was accepted on Aug 1 and is coordinated with VLA, NICER, NUSTAR and Gemini, and an observation of AT2019osy, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Sep 6.
