Chandra Release - September 6, 2017 Visual Description: GJ 176 The graphic features an artist's illustration as the main panel with a small inset X-ray image of a Sun-like star named GJ 176. GJ 176 resembles our own Sun, but it is slightly smaller and cooler than our Sun. The illustration shows a yellow sun in the center, with a Jupiter-like planet orbiting around it. The planet appears to be relatively small compared to the size of the sun. The structure of GJ 176 is similar to that of our Sun, consisting of a hot, glowing core surrounded by a convective outer layer. However, unlike our Sun, GJ 176 has a cooler surface temperature of around 5,000 degrees Celsius (9,000 degrees Fahrenheit). The Chandra X-ray Observatory image at lower left is a purple dot and provides valuable insights into the internal structure of GJ 176, allowing scientists to study its magnetic field, temperature, and other physical properties.
