6. Final Exam of Chandra Spacecraft
NASA's 39-foot-tall satellite (CXO) is shown being prepared for insertion in a large grey thermal/vacuum chamber at TRW's (now NGST's) satellite production facilities, in Redondo Beach, CA. During the test, which lasts about one month, the chamber is pumped down to simulate the vacuum of space, then the satellite is exposed to alternate periods of extreme heat and extreme cold. The test is designed to verify that the CXO's subsystems can survive the extreme thermal environment in which they must operate.
