Q&A: Normal Stars, White Dwarf Stars, and Star Clusters

Q:
Has Chandra observed Cygnus X-1?

A:
Cygnus X-1 has been observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory (about 9 different pointing's as of April 23, 2003). The data are proprietary for a year, so the scientific team involved has exclusive rights for that period, although they may publish a paper before then. We may soon have an image of Cyg X-1 on this web site, however, so please see the following references until it becomes available:

Schultz et al. 2002ApJ...565.1141S The First High-Resolution X-Ray Spectrum of Cygnus X-1: Soft X-Ray Ionization and Absorption
J. Miller et al 2002ApJ...578..348 Resolving the Composite Fe Kα Emission Line in the Galactic Black Hole Cygnus X-1 with Chandra
