CXC Biographies: Dr. Steven Allen
Royal Society University Research Fellow, Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge, UK
Dr. Steven Allen is a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge, United Kingdom, where he is also a member of the X-ray astronomy group. He received a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Cambridge in 1994. His main scientific interests are galaxy clusters, in particular their X-ray properties, and the use of galaxy clusters as cosmological probes.
Dr. Allen is currently leading a Chandra project to measure the distributions of dark and luminous matter in galaxy clusters, and to use these measurements, in combination with other astronomical data, to determine cosmological parameters such as the mean dark matter and dark energy densities of the Universe. He has worked extensively on the properties of the X-ray luminous gas in galaxy clusters, and on the importance of heating and cooling processes to the observed X-ray emission.
