Chandra X-ray Image of NGC 281
The Chandra data of NGC 281 show more than 300 individual X-ray sources, most of which are associated with the central star cluster. The edge-on aspect of NGC 281 allows scientists to study the effects of powerful X-rays on the gas in the region, the raw material for star formation.

Kitt Peak Optical Image of NGC 281
NGC 281 shows a centralized cluster of hot blue stars, dust and gas, and lanes of obscuring dust. NGC 281 is about 9,500 light years from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia. This wide-field view of the star-forming region NGC 281 was taken with the WIYN 0.9-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, AZ.
